Preparing the Dry Dock

Every successful marathon begins the night before, with the ritual of the staging area. The kitchen table is transformed into a dry dock, covered with a self-healing cutting mat and flanked by neat rows of tools: fine-tipped nippers, files of varying grit, tweezers that gleam like surgical instruments, and bottles of liquid cement with their needle-fine applicators. A small humidifier is placed nearby; dry winter rain can create static, turning tiny photo-etched parts into skittish flecks of metal that spring from the tweezers and vanish into the carpet. A tray of damp paper towels under the desk ensures the air remains kind.

As the rain settles into a steady, hypnotic rhythm, the work begins. The first cuts are decisive—nippers severing parts from the sprue with a satisfying snip. Flash is scraped away, seam lines are sanded smooth, and dry-fitting becomes a dance of gentle pressure and adjustment. The model does not yield immediately; it demands persuasion, a little flex here, a tiny shave there. The camaraderie of the rain means there is no rush. Each joint is fitted, disassembled, and fitted again until the connection is flawless.

The application of cement is a moment of high drama. The rain outside seems to seep into the work, lending an authentic mood of damp, gritty realism.

The Final Display and the Clearing Sky

As the clouds begin to thin and the last drizzle streaks the window, the model takes its final form. The landing gear is glued into place, the canopy is polished and attached with white glue, and the final decals are softened with a drop of solution to conform to every rivet and curve. The model is placed on a simple plinth or a small diorama base that was prepared during the lunch hour. A tiny figure stands beside it, a scale human to give the machine its due grandeur.

The room is now a mess of cotton buds, empty paint jars, and torn masking tape. The hands are stained with silver and black, and the back aches from hours of leaning forward.
